
During Discover programs we hope to provide ourselves as organized and professional. That generally means we appear extra-early, run around like crazy people making certain the brochures we sent ahead of time have arrived, curse at non-functioning technology, and have the resort manager’s quantity on speed dial. Legislation school at Georgetown…working for the CIA….no big deal.
I was scheduled to talk briefly at this program. A big part of my job is speaking in public; we give presentations to students in auditoriums, classrooms, and career centers on a regular basis. So I have always been generally very comfortable talking up to a group. That stuff doesn’t anymore faze me. Nevertheless, put me in a hotel ball room because of the Dean of Admission (my boss’s boss’s employer) and have me to speak, and I also’ll feel a little nervous ( just a tad!)
It was great to see a few familiar faces of students I had met at high schools that week. I talked with one family that has driven about four hours to go to! While we loved that the family was here, do not feel that you’ve got to make that sacrifice. Whenever we are not coming to a city towards you, please feel free to just let your admission counselor understand that you would like more information but can not attend a Discover program.
When our formal presentation is finished there is the opportunity to inquire and hear from admission counselors from academic divisions. Students can split into groups according to market and get major questions that are related well. I heard from numerous families who have been having their first experience with USC that evening. Several other moms and dads provided with me personally that they had already been to USC, but they learned one thing new which somehow changed their perspective regarding the university application process or about USC. I additionally talked with a parent who appeared to have some outdated information about USC or had accumulated some information based on someone else’s experience. The Myth: I can take the SAT or ACT prior to the admission due date and it will be fine.
The Verdict: Not an idea that is great. The test may not ensure it is into your application with time for review.
With our December 1 deadline approaching, it’s almost that season when our office is delivered thousands and thousands of applications, transcripts, test scores and letters of recommendation. Honestly, it is amazing that every thing gets placed into every single student’s application file given the volume that is high of we receive.
Its essential to understand that it takes a significant amount of time for all application materials become organized and downloaded as a student’s application file- especially test scores. Think about any of it. SAT and ACT offer certain test times and dates. Then they need to score those tests, deliver you your rating, and then send the score to all the colleges on your list. This takes a huge amount of time on the end, and it takes weeks that are several our end to download and process the scores.
Invest the a standard test right before the admission deadline, it can occupy to two weeks as soon as the test is scored to be downloaded into your application file. That could be far too late.
